Shirley Bowman Culvern of Morristown, TN passed away Tuesday, August 24, 2021 at the age of 96. Shirley was born May 10, 1925 in Marshall, NC where she graduated at the age of 15 as Valedictorian from high school and attended Queens College receiving a B.S. degree in Chemistry. During WWII, she worked in a lab separating uranium at Oak Ridge, TN in what later became known as the Manhattan Project. Following her marriage to Julian in 1946, Shirley taught high school in Florence, AL, 7th Grade Science in Morristown Junior High and attended post graduate classes at UT.
Instead of retirement, Shirley and Julian moved to Marshall, NC for ten years to take care of her parents and became a Certified Funeral Director for her father’s funeral home. She and Julian returned to Morristown to friends and family after the death of her parents. Shirley was a lifelong Presbyterian and was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church in Morristown, TN. She was an Elder, active in Presbyterian Women and loved teaching her Sunday School class. Over her long life Shirley enjoyed traveling the country with Julian, loved her book clubs, garden club and bridge club. Shirley is preceded in death by her parents. C. Dedrick Bowman and Hazel Congdon Bowman, and her beloved older brother, Parker. She is survived by her daughter, Janine Hagan (Don), son, David Culvern (Susan) and daughter Linda Burian (Steve). She was blessed with six grandchildren: Brian Hagan (Mark Rittenhouse), Kevin Hagan (Alise), Christopher Culvern (Katie), Emily Hullander (Jackson), Shelley Burian, Scott Burian (Megan); five great grandchildren: Spencer and Natalie Hagan, Noah Culvern, Walker and Colton Hullander, dear cousins; Robert C . “Rocky” Bowman (Betty) and Carolyn Ann Bowman Jones and extended family.
Visitation with the family and friends will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Morristown on Saturday, August 28, 2021 at 3:30 pm with a service to the Resurrection following at 5:00 pm. A family burial will be held in Bowman-Rector Cemetery, Marshall, NC on Sunday, August 29, 2021at 3:00 pm.
Friends may stop by Mayes Mortuary at any time to sign the register book prior to the services.
