Obituary

Joan Hall Weir, 87, of Knoxville, TN passed peacefully on February 5, 2021. Joan Love Hall was born on March 22, 1933 in Asheville, NC to Reno and Joreka (Morgan) Hall. Joan and her family moved to Morristown, TN when her father was transferred with American Enka to its new plant facility in Lowland, TN. Joan graduated from Morristown High School. She attended Meredith College in Raleigh, NC. She met, James Weldon Weir, Jr, her husband of over 40 years while he was attending North Carolina State University.  Joan taught school until her husband completed his undergraduate degree at NC State. After his graduation and work as a civil engineer began, Joan returned to school and graduated from Carson Newman College with a degree in history. After her graduation, her husband enrolled at the University of North Carolina for his Masters of Business Administration. Upon receiving his MBA he was commissioned as a Naval officer and they moved to Pensacola, FL. While in Florida the couple welcomed their son, James Weldon Weir, III.  The family travelled the world during Jim’s military career. Upon his retirement the family returned to Morristown. After Jim’s retirement, Joan and Jim attended Southern Seminary and ultimately graduated from Southeastern Seminary in Wake Forest, NC. Following graduation the couple was appointed to Strawberry Plains Methodist Church. Jim was appointed pastor and Joan was appointed Associate Pastor. They pastored several churches before returning to Florida. After her husband’s death Joan returned to Tennessee, settling in Knoxville. Joan was a member of First United Methodist Church in Morristown for many years where she taught Sunday school to a large group of lifelong friends. Joan was preceded in death by her parents Reno and Joreka, sister Sandra Loupe, husband Jim, and sister-in-law Neolene “Sunny” (Hines) Hall. She is survived by her son Weldon, daughter-in-law Lisa (Hallinen) Weir, and most adored grandchildren James Weldon Weir, IV and Hal William Weir. She is also survived by her brother William Hall, nephews Bill Hall, David Hall, Todd Loupe, Zachary Loupe, and great-nephews Austin Hall, Alex Hall, Anthony Hall, and Aiken Hall. Funeral services will be 4:00 PM, Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2021 with Rev. Walter Weikel officiating. Family to receive friends2:30 PM until 4:00 PM prior to services at Mayes Mortuary.  Interment to follow at a later date at the convenience of the family in Green Hills Cemetery, Asheville, NC.
