Hassell Gray Sykes, age 95, passed away peacefully at his home on January 15, 2021. Born to the late James and Laura Sykes on January 12, 1926 in Spring Hope, North Carolina. Hassell devoted his life to family and agriculture. He raised tobacco and livestock on his farm in North Carolina for many years. He was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Spring Hope, North Carolina. He left behind a testimony of his faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. His hobbies included: fishing, watching the Atlanta Braves, and cooking North Carolina style barbeque.
Hassell was a Navy veteran. He served in the Pacific theater during World War II aboard the USS LST 1101. He was honorably discharged in 1946.
He is preceded in death by his parents, James and Laura Sykes and a total of twelve brothers and sisters.
He is survived by his children, Gary Sykes, Sherry (Michael) Ramsey, Sandra (Steve) Whittle; grandchildren, Jason (Margo) Shoemaker, Daniel Sykes, Emily (Daniel) McMurray; great – grandchildren, Morgan Sykes, Thomas and Caroline Shoemaker.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, family and friends may pay their respects at their own convenience on Monday, January 18, 2021 from 9:00am – 1:00 pm at Mayes Mortuary. Graveside services, including military honors, will be Monday, January 18, 2021 at 2:00 pm in the cemetery of Central Baptist Church. Rev. Shane Pierce will officiate the service.
