Lacon Hubert Carlock, Jr., formally of Hixon, TN/Franklin, NC entered into eternal life on July 30, 2009. He was born August 13, 1911 in Lafollette, TN,. To the Honorable Judge Lacon H. Carlock, Sr. and Iva Lee Edwards. Mr. Carlock was an alumni of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and earned his degree in Chemical Engineering. He later pursed and received degrees in Civil and Geological Engineering. He was employed with The Coast and Geodetic Survey, charting the coastal waters from New England to the Louisiana shores. He assisted with the design and layout of the first highway from Knoxville to Gatlinburg, TN., that changed the history in federal highway specifications. Mr. Carlock married Isabel Gaskill, March 27, 1937 in Knoxville, TN. They were blessed with the births of their sons, Lacon H., III and daughter, Janell. Tennessee Valley Authority employed Mr. Carlock in 1937, this was interrupted by the event of WWII. He served as Executive Officer aboard the USS Pathfinder in the Pacific charting harbors and waterways prior to allied invasion. He was awarded the Purple Heart. After the war, he returned to TVA and again Uncle San required his expertise, Commander Carlock was assigned to the United States Naval Bureau of Ordinance in Washington, D.C. until the end of the Korean War. He returned to TVA and retired as Director of Power Construction in 1973. His strong interest in current affairs, hiking the Appalachian Trail, the appreciation of the Arts and a quiet evening with a good book and classical Music were among his many passions. He had a deep amorous disposition fo the sea that is eternal. Mr. Carlock will meet again all of his loved ones preceding him including his loving parents, his beloved wife of 41 years, his precious daughter, his sister Lee Carlock Cain, a brother-in-law, Gordon Gaskill and a sister-in-law Mary Hester Gaskill Brownell. He is survived by his namesake, Lacon H. (Hank) Carlock, III and wife Patricia of Morristown, TN. Grandchildren, Jana Lee Hurst and husband Richard of Franklin, NC. Michael L. Carlock and wife Cindy of Elizabethton, TN. William A. (Tony) Crews of Zebulon, NC, and Stacey H. Carlock of Morristown, TN. Four great granddaughters, son-in-law, Donald Maurer of Sweetwater, TN, a brother-in-law, Lincoln Brownell of Williston, VT, four nephews, one niece, several cousins and special friends and neighbors, Thomas and Mary Wooten of Hixon, TN. Memorial services will be 2:00 PM, Sunday August 2, 2009 at Mayes Family Services Downtown Chapel. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or The Morristown ALPS Day Center in memory of Mr. Carlock. Visitation with the family will be Friday, July 31, 2009 from 5:00PM until 7:00 PM and Sunday from 1:00 PM until service time at the funeral home.
