Kenneth E. (Ken) Douthat, age 51 of Nashville, formally of Morristown. Attorney and loving father, son, brother and friend, passed away Saturday, August 22, 2009, at Centennial Medical Center, Nashville, after a brief illness. He is remembered by family and friends for his intellect, humor and wit, compassion, patience, and the pride and joy he shared in being a father. He was preceded in death by his father Hal E. Douthat, Morristown and grandparents: Estell and Flora Douthat, Mohawk and Hugh and Ruth Nenney, Morristown. Survivors include his son Alexander, of Nashville, mother Patsy N. Douthat Dunlap (Melvyn); Morristown, TN.; brother Richard (Kathy), Douthat; nephews Patrick and Brian Douthat, all of Knoxville. Several aunts, uncles and cousins. Mr. Douthat was a 1976 graduate of Morristown East High School, where he played football and ran track. He was active in Boy Scout Troop 91, becoming at the time the youngest Scout ever in Hamblen County to earn the highest rank of Eagle Scout. He earned a bachelor's degree with high honors from the University of Tennessee in 1980 and graduated in 1983 from the UT School of Law, where he was a member of the Law Review. He began his legal career in his hometown as an associate with Jim Stambaugh & Associates. In 1985, he joined the Nashville firm of King & Ballow as a litigation attorney and made partner in 1990. Mr. Douthat's career focused on employment and labor law. In a major labor strike of 1990-91, he and several other attorneys represented the New York Daily News in a litigation suit. He was admitted to practice before the Courts of Tennessee, the United States Supreme Court, the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and conducted trials and hearings in more than 15 other states. At Tuke, Yopp & Sweeney, Mr. Douthat served as partner, head of the labor and employment practice and mentor for younger attorneys. With the Nashville office of the Ohio-based practice of Dinsmore & Shohl, he was the Tennessee representative of the Employment Law Alliance, an international organization of labor and employment lawyers. He was also an Assistant Attorney General with the State of Tennessee in the civil litigation and state services division. Mr. Douthat was an avid reader and student of history, a lover of music, a member of the Nashville Ski Club, a lifelong Vols fan, a Titans season ticket-holder, and a fan of the Chicago Cubs and Nashville Predators. His love and knowledge of sports also carried over into his hobby as a serious competitor in fantasy football. Family will receive friends Tuesday, August 25, 2009 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM with funeral services to follow at 8:00 PM at Mayes Family Services Downtown Chapel. Graveside services will be 11:00 AM, Wednesday, August 26, 2009 at Hamblen Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Boy Scouts, Second Presbyterian Church, Nashville, or the charity of choice. Arangements by Mayes Family Services, Downtown Chapel.
