Julian was born on Culvern Street in Asheville, NC to Louise Brewer and Eugene Curtis Culvern. He was a life long Presbyterian, and the youngest of four children. His brothers and sister were Frederick Eugene Culvern, Robert Mickle Culvern, Dorothy Culvern Folk. His
youth was spent in Kershaw and Camden, SC. He earned a BS from NC State and an MS from Ohio State, both in chemistry. He was drafted during WW2 and assigned to the Manhattan project in Oak Ridge, TN. In 1945 he met Shirley Bowman, a fellow chemist at Y12. They were
married on Feb 8, 1946, and recently celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary. Julian and Shirley's joy are their 3 children: Janine (Don) Hagan, David Bowman(Susan North) Culvern, and Linda(Steve) Burian. Their beloved grandchildren are Brian (Mark) Hagan, Kevin (Alise) Hagan, Christopher North Culvern, Emily Culvern (Jackson) Hullander, and Shelley and Scott Burian. They love two great grandchildren, Spencer and Natalie Hagan. Their treasured family, include his nieces and nephews Joe (Rita) and Sam (Pam) Culvern, Pam (Skip) Bishop, James Edward (Linda) Folk, Fred (Martha Hope) Folk, and Mary Louise (Doug) Lowe.
Julian was a Boy Scout for 87 years. He earned the rank of Eagle. He spent a lifetime living the scout oath, law, and motto. While in college he worked at his ancestor's "Haile Gold mine." It's history became a lifelong passion of his. His hobbies included sharing his love for God's creation by writing articles, collecting rocks, hiking, and landscaping. The family will receive friends on Friday March 2 from 1:00 - 3:00 at the First Presbyterian Church of Morristown. A celebration of life will follow in the sanctuary. Memorials may be made to the FPC ministers discretionary fund, or to Cherokee District, The Great Smoky Mountain Council, BSA in Knoxville, TN.
