Gwendolyn McAllister

June 11, 1953 ~ June 6, 2018 (age 64)
Gwendolyn Denise McAlister was born on June 11, 1953 and lived 64 years, 360 days before entering eternity with Jesus on June 6, 2018. In those 64 years, 360 days, Gwen lived a very full and robust life. Being born with a very rare disease which caused her to be born without eyeballs, Gwen was adopted into a loving Christian home with five siblings. Her parents, Herman and Millie, introduced Gwen to Jesus and her life became a powerful testimony of God's grace. After completing her education at the Tennessee School for the Blind in Knoxville, Gwen made her way to Morristown and worked for Lions Volunteer Blind Industries. It was here that Gwen spent 25+ years as a seamstress, sewing camouflage helmet covers for the U.S. military. Gwen made many life-long friends there, and her love and encouragement touched so many of her co-workers' lives. Gwen had an exuberant, loving, accepting, and joyful spirit; all who came into contact with here were drawn to her. Despite her blindness, Gwen never used that as an excuse to not learn new things. She could sing and play the piano, using these gifts and talents in many churches in Morristown and other communities where she resided.
Gwen was involved in Joni and Friends, a ministry started by Joni Erickson Tada, a quadriplegic, cancer survivor, and Christian author, which ministers to those with special needs and their caregivers. She attended her first family camp in 2003, and was always one of the most anticipated guests by those who volunteered, as well as the other guests of honor. Gwen's impact was evident wherever she went. For the last seven years of her life, she resided at Life Care Center of Morristown. Nearly every person there, if asked about Gwen, could share a story of how Gwen has been a great encouragement in his/her life. Gwen spent the last part of her life with many complicated health issues, but she was always thankful. Whether she could walk well and speak clearly or was in the hospital with sickness and pain, Gwen was ALWAYS thankful. She taught all what a life lived out of love and thankfulness to God looks like. She will truly be missed by countless people who know and love her.
Gwen was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Willie Williamson, her special friend, Linda, and so many special people who were a part of her life for a season. She is survived by her god-sister, Limateen Smith; god-nieces, Tera Tapscot and Shina Meadows; god-nephews, Melvin Smith, Jr, and Robert Truss; and god-sister, Frances Burum. Funeral services will be held at Living Promise Lutheran Church on Friday, June 8th. Visitation will be on Friday from 5-6pm and the funeral at 6pm. Graveside services will be on Saturday, June 9th at 11am at Hamblen Memorial Gardens. Pastor Matt Westra will be officiating both services.
