William King Alexander, age 92, passed away peacefully on April 25, 2021 at NHC Cavette Hill in Knoxville, TN. He was born on June 16, 1928 in Knoxville, TN, to Gladys and Cyrus Bauman Alexander, having one brother, Bauman Alexander, Jr. Raised in the Fort Sanders community, Bill graduated from Knoxville High School in 1946 where he was a member of the track and football teams, honor society and ROTC. He also earned his Eagle Scout during that time. He then attended the University of Tennessee where he earned a Bachelor of Science. While at U.T., he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta social fraternity and Phi Eta Sigma, Beta Gamma Sigma and Phi Kappa Phi honor societies. After graduation from U.T. in 1950, he moved to Morristown, TN, where he worked at American Enka, made many life-long friends and met his future wife, Patricia Rouse. After several years of working at American Enka, he decided to go back to medical school which he attended at the University of Tennessee Medical School in Memphis, TN. While in medical school, he and Patty married. They were married for 62 years and had four children, Karen, Kathy, William, Jr. and Beth Alexander. Following graduation from medical school, he completed his residency at the newly opened U.T. Memorial Research Center, now U.T. Medical Center. Following his residency and birth of twin daughters Karen & Kathy, he and Patty moved back to Morristown where, in 1960, he opened his first office in Radio Center. As a general practitioner, he performed internal medicine, OBGYN and surgery, making house calls in Hamblen and surrounding counties. He was an active member of Morristown Hamblen Hospital where he served as Chief of Staff and Chief of Surgery several times and was a member of the AMA, TMA, Southern medical Society and Lakeway Medical Society. He was also an avid & skilled pilot and served as an Aviation Medical Examiner for over 30 years. As a devout Christian, he was an active member of First United Methodist Church and long time member of the Hugh Taylor Sunday school class. In his spare time he enjoyed boating & fishing, antique cars and spending time with friends and family. He is survived by his daughters Elizabeth Alexander and Karen Davis as well as his son, William K. Alexander, Jr. & wife Sarah Alexander along with grandchildren Kris Wagner, Margot Ross, Lyla Ross and Harrison Fortenberry and great grandchild Grace Wagner. Family, friends and others are invited to First United Methodist Church in Morristown, TN, for receiving of friends from 4-6 PM on Wednesday, April 28, with service following at 6 PM. The graveside service will be held at Highland Memorial Cemetery in Knoxville, TN, on Thursday, April 29 at 11 AM. The family asks to please practice social distancing when possible and wear a mask.
