Donald retired from the U.S. Navy where he served as a petty officer third class aboard the USS Jenkins, USS Halsey Powell and the USS Carpenter. Donald was proud of his military service and the friends he made from his service connections. He always enjoyed sharing his stories from his military years. He spent his 45- year career as a barber, owning Sky City Barber Shop, Brooks Barber Shop and Russellville Barber Shop. He gave away many free haircuts to those in need or those in ministry. Everywhere he went he would see someone who had been a customer. He still recognized people he had cut their hair 40 years ago. He was a MASON (Lodge 231) and Shriner (Kerbela Temple) since 1968. He was active in the Shrine paper sale each year beginning in the day when Shriners walked door to door all over town. He later worked intersections to sell papers and always had a large donation jar in each of his barber shops to collect money for children all year until the paper sale time arrived. Donald never met a stranger. If he didn’t know you, he would talk and find out all about you before you parted ways. He has made many friends in his 89 years. He liked antique cars, working outdoors, and spending time with his family. He was happiest when he was riding his tractor or mower. His services will be at 2:00PM on Friday, April 22nd 2022 at Hamblen Memory Gardens in the Mausoleum with Rev. Danny Georges officiating. Friends may call to Mayes Mortuary on Thursday April 21st 2022 at their convenience. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital fund.
